  1. ESP Fault and No Dash Symbol
    #1
    kevshek Guest
I was wondering if anyone could clarify, when you turn the ignition ON, aswell as the ABS, Handbrake light etc, does the ESP (skiddy car and tyre track) Symbol come on momentarily prior to cranking the engine?

My does not light up at all, and the ESP OFF switch on the centre console doesnt do anything. Im also sure my car will wheelspin in the wet.

Ive just had it back from a warranty repair. After scanning the ECU, there was a fault with the ABS Pressure Sensor, this i was told could stop the operation of the ESP. However, even after its now been fixed and the fault code has been cleared, ESP is still not functioning.

Heres a scan i took today, although its a Plus, i presume its the same as a normal mk5.
Could the 2 Steering Wheel Electronc faults be responsible?

Can't help with the scan info but try this - with engine running, turn off the ESP. Light should come on. Turn it on again, light should go off. This ought to be a pretty good indicator of things.

I know thats how its supposed to work, but mine doesnt, neither the button or the dash light lights up at all. The only thing i think it can relate too is the DTC memory steering electronic fault mentioned above. ESP uses wheel speed signal, steering angle etc to calculate intervention, maybe this fault has shut it down.

Someone mentioned that there maybe a proceedure to reset the DTC of the steering wheel, and it was probably caused when i had the wheel off installing cruise control. If anyone can shed any light on the steering wheel thing, that may help.

From what you have described regarding the ESP light not coming on atall it looks like someone has removed the bulb to mask the ESP malfunction issue (ABS pump problem, common fault).
I would surgest that you return the car back to where or who ever did the warranty work and ask them to explain what they have done to rectify the ESP not working issue. Then point out to them that it is still not working and it appears that the ESP dash light has been removed seeing that it does not seem to work.

The ESP not working is a common problem (we have it on my wifes tdi Touran) it is something we are going to live without seeing to rectify this issue is megga bucks.

    Good luck.

I also had the same though, and was told that the ESP light was an LED when i asked. These are usually harder to mask as you wouldneed to dismantle the gauge cluster to blank it, but its would explain a lot. There looks like some dust behind the perspex and it could be possible someones been in there, so i might investigate myself. I dont think the used car dealer where i gotit from would come clean. The way they deal with sale and service/repairsare totally seperate (not even on the same site!) This means if you have a problem, its no use going back to the showroom, which is very sneaker clever. However, the warranty was good enough to cover the repairs. If need be, i can lways make further claims to rectify it.

When I investigated the ESP light issue for my wifes Touran I found a thread here that described your exact same issue. That person found that a plug(I'm not quite sure where) had been disconnected thus removing the warning light on the dash.

Have a look through the VW Touran dart of the forum and you will probably find this thread and several other cases.

All I know to rectify this ESP issue you will need to part with upto and beyond £1200

    Cheers

VW have issued a repair kit for the ESP fault, our Mk5 Golf with over 100K VW service history, although one a specialist and we have been offered 75% good will gesture.

Dealer tried to offload full new unit for over £1k but repair kit is £400 and a bit!

    Worth checkng out

I was informed by my local VW dealer that there was a "bolt on" repair kit however they also said that this kit would only work on some of the abs pumps. It turns out that there are different abs pumps and not all can be fixed with this kit. When I questioned Vw asking them if our Touran could have the bolt on kit fitted they replied that they could not tell via our number plate or vin number and that they would need the vehicle in for investigation(at our expenxce). To be honest I understand that even if we had a brand new replacment item fitted this item will fail in time too.

We are happy enough with not having the esp working (years ago we had a 110bhp passat 1.9tdi that never had esp and it drove fine) after all the Touran is no rocket ship and we have had no issues with it not working.

ESP is nice to have but not cost effective if you have to pay the repair bill for it.
