    Hi All, im an 80 Tdi owner looking to upgrade! I have seen an A4 advertised with a so called "snapped cam belt, engine fine" are these safe engines?
    (its the AVG engine i think)

    Well if it has had a snapped cam belt its likely that the valves and pistons are damaged. So it most probably wont start. You'll need the head reconditioned with new valves, lifters and all the other stuff. Also if you have a damaged piston you will need to replace them. If you can do the work yourself the bill wont amount to anything over a grand. I have just rebuilt my engine as found HERE

    I only did the head my pistons where fine. But as i said, you may be unlucky to find that the damage is more than the seller thinks.

    Unless it's actually been inspected as undamaged (ie the head removed) don't bother. It could be complete scrap. Some people do get away with a snapped belt (usually when at a standstill), but the chances of having no piston to valve contact happen are very small.
