I wonder if anyone can help with an issue I have with a 1992 VW Golf GTi 8 valve 5 door. I recently purchased it with a view to doing up and using during the summer whilst my other car is off the road.

The drivers door does not lock from the exterior lock when using the key, it feels as if it is not connected to anything with no resistance when turning the key whereas when `i turn the key to unlock the car resistance is felt and the doors unlock. I can lock the car from the inside by pressing the knob down and all then all doors lock ok, just nothing from the external lock.

I removed the door card to have a look at the mechanism and saw that the electric window motor had been disconnected. Upon plugging it in, the window instantly opened (even without the ignition being on) but I am unable to close the window. Operating the switch and I can hear a click when trying to open the window but nothing when i try to close it. The n/s/f window operates ok from the o/s door switch although this is a bit intermittent. I have had to remove the glass from the mechanism to keep the car water tight.

Are the door and window connected electrically in any way?, I read somewhere that you can close the window from the drivers door when locking the car. Does anyone have any ideas as to what I can do with both faults. I have been trying to find a wiring diagram (the Haynes manual is not very good) so that I can trace the wiring. If anyone can direct me in the right direction to finding one.

Any help would be appreciated, I am sure that I will be asking for more in the future.
