Had the AA out again and they scanned my cab and had this error message:

    P0118+ Engine Coolant Trip Sensor

Any ideas? Fan keeps coming on as soon as the car is started and its running rough, AA guy said the engine thinks its still cold, and it forcing more fuel into the engine to compensate, where is the sensor located and whats it like to replace?
Any one know of a part number from Audi, or what the sensor is called at a main dealers?

    Year and engine code please?

16502 (P0118) - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (G62): Signal too High

It could be that the sensor is faulty or that the engine is overheating, new sensor first.

Cheers crasher, its a 2003 3.0 sport cab, where will I find the engine code? AA man said temp was fine (90 degrees today in the sun) and said about the sensor, I read somewhere that they have 2 sensors, 1 in expansion chamber and one on the engine? Does that sound right? Was going to get the cheaper one (on/in expansion chamber) Monday from Audi if I got any feedback from you guys

It will be an ASN or BBJ engine; this is on your registration document, in the front cover of the service book, on a sticker on the cam belt cover and on a sticker on the boot floor.

The coolant temperature sender, known as component G62, is a four pin dual output (one to the dash, the other to the engine) unit and will probably be black with a green paint mark, new ones are completely green and available from many sources under the VAG part number 059 919 501 A for at the most around £26 and you will also need seal N 903 168 02 (£1) although these are often included in non genuine versions as is the plastic retaining clip 032 121 142 (50p).

The sensor is located in the steel pipe at the back of the engine between the two cylinder heads and is often corroded into the pipe, requiring a little force to remove it. You MUST only remove this sensor when the engine is stone cold and only after releasing the system pressure by removing the coolant tank expansion tank cap. A considerable amount of coolant will be lost when the sensor is removed so you will require a 50/50 mix of G12 compatible coolant to top it back up.

    Crasher/All

On my 3.0 V6, do I remove the air pipe that goes from the air box to the rear of the engine, is sort of 'opens out' as it jonis the back of the engine, remove this and the sensor is at the rear of the engine, slightly to the left as you look at it (from the bumper). Is it the one mounted vertically? (the plug is at the top of it as you look down)

Hope that makes sense guys *blushes*
