2008 Touran Door Not Opening

Hi,

I have a 2008 Touran and the driver side passenger door is jammed and won't open using the remote fob. I can hear the mechanism try to open it when I press the button but nothing happens. When I try and open it from inside that doesn't work either. When I pull the lever from inside it feels as if the lever is free.

Has anyone had a similar problem and do they know of a fix? Like to avoid a repair bill if possible.

Update: phoned my local garage and he thinks will have to break the lock and replace it. He is quoting £80 which seems a resonable offer.

Also, found the following link on the net which shows how to remove the door panel and the lock. Unfortunately my DIY skills are pretty non-existant. I can see where bolts 2 & 3 will be on removing the panel on the handle but I don't understand where bolt 4 is. Also, what is a suitable alternative for this T10039/1 tool?

The last option is to phone the VW dealer and ask him to fix it for free. I only bought the car in Jan and it only came with a 3 month warranty (mistake on my part to buy it with just 3 months - should have walked away unless they changed it to 12 months). Do you think I have a case to ask them to do it FOC?

You bought from a VW dealer? If so, it doesn't seem unreasonable to me to call VWUK and argue the fact that this shouldn't be happening on a car of this age, bought from a main dealer! UK consumer law gives more protection than the warranty, you just have to have reason on your side. What is the service history & mileage?

I have had a two year old Touran in with the right rear door not opening but the owner can’t stand the local dealers so paid me to fit a new lock unit whilst it was still under warranty. The way I got it open was to lock and unlock and pull on the inner and outer handles constantly whilst banging the door carefully and eventually it opened after about half an hour of trying. What really annoyed me was I got called away just as I had got it open and was not able to get back to it for nearly and hour and I absentmindedly closed the door! Took me another half an hour in the baking sun to get it open again, my language was colourful…

Update: Decided to follow the route of getting VW to look at the problem. Had a brush up on the Sales of Goods Act before I called them. After an initial refusal to do anything FOC other than come in and have a look I stuck to my point of view and after a few days of phone calls it was agreed that I would get a replacement FOC. Turns out the previous owner had the door replaced back in October and so the dealer can claim the money back from VW on that basis.

It always amazes me how much information about a car is witheld from the buyer. Surely the full history of the car should be made available to a buyer rather than just the service stamps. I don't think there is any other area in my life where I would spend so much money with so little back ground info.

If you have info on which dealer did which service you can always ask them to print you off a copy of the job sheets. I've done that with an Audi dealer in the past and they were happy to help me out. You've got to be personable in the first place of course.

Good going with VW. It is even more like getting blood out of a stone in these austere times but I'm sure you had the law on your side in this case so they would have to give something.

I have similar symptoms on a 2008 Touran also. Sometimes the lock releases and other times, it doesn't.

I presume it needs a new lock mechanism? I just priced one at the local dealer and it came to €190. Does this sound right?

Are these VW Touran Rear Right / Rear Driver Side Door Lock Mechanism (2005-2009) | eBay any good?

Is it possible to get genuine, VW locks cheaper anywhere?

Unless you are lucky enough to come across one, the only place to buy genuine ones is from the dealer AND you will only get the full 2 year VW dealer backed warranty when buying it from the dealer or TPS if you have them over there. I think that aftermarket one is Chinese.

Before you replace the mechanism try tracing the wiring back through to the chassis and connector plugs. I had a similar problem but, after dismantling the door and circuit it disappeared.

Is there much to dismantling the door from the inside?

The door skin is fixed in position on the Touran.

I haven't seen any guides online about it.
