This seems to be happening more amd more frequently at the minute. After only about 5 minutes of driving, before the oil temperature is 50deg, the engine will idle at 1000rpm. Turning the engine off and on again will clear it temporarily but after another minute ir so it's back!

Also after a longer run, about 20 minutes last night, both fans kicked in and stayed on for about 5 minutes after the engine was shut down.

I had the oil and filter changed two weeks ago, an the car has spent the last 2 weeks in the dealers getting a new gear box. I really don't want to go back with another problem cause I'm sure there fed up looking at my car. If it had been in for a service I thought any fault codes would have been dealt with.

I would get a code read. A number of things could cause this. You may not have any codes in which case I would get an engine measuring block scan and post it here.

You don't say what engine your car has. It it's a diesel with DPF, the fans can run for a period of time after the engine is switched off. It's to help cool the DPF and is normal operation of the engine management system.

That depends on the age of the car. If it's still under the VW warranty, then they might fix any faults they find if VW will pay them for the repairs. If it's out of warranty, they won't fix things without you authorising the work first. Either way, I'm sure they would report to you any faults they found while servicing the car.

    Jim.

The car is a 2009 2.0TDI 110 CR with 25k on the clock. I was always told that a good rev about once in a while kept the DPF clear and working well. The dealer never mentioned anything about any other issues. It has since stopped doing it but idle still isn't as smooth as it used to be.

Where is the dpf located? I always thought it was on the left hand side of the engine cover beside the coolant and washer fill point.

The DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) is part of the exhaust and is located down the back of the engine. There's a bit more to clearing the DPF than 'a good rev', but if you do mainly motorway driving, the system should pretty much look after itself. If you do a lot of stop/start town driving the exhaust may not get hot enough for long enough to clear the filter properly. If too much soot builds up in the filter (>50%) the DPF light will come on on the dash. You then need to drive at a speed of 40-45MPH (in 4th gear) for approx 10-15mins to clear the filter. If you ignore the light and the soot content continues to build up, the engine performance will start to reduce and the glow plug light will start to flash. By that time, you'll have to visit the dealer to get them to clear the filter. They force the system into a regeneration cycle using the diagnostic scan tool. If the filter is blocked so bad that they are unable to clear it, then you need a new filter at about £800. And it's not covered by the VW warranty...ouch!
