As it's coming up to 39k now, there's just a few things I'm curious about:

Up to now have been using main agent for warranty reasons for periodic service on the two year cycle: They say that they use the same engine oil for both but unless you watchit your service book will only be signed up for one year's and tbe service history not up rated to +20k miles

Now ready for 40k, service reminder came on at 38,800 as expected (corrected) via VCDS. About a week later the "check brake pads" warning came up. Had a set of new rears but the fitter said originals were only half worn. But given the mileage had them changed anyways. How does the Management Control Unit know when they're worn and needing replacement? There isn't any leads coming out of the pads to be able to give that info. But I'm well out of date as last time I did my own maintenance was in mid-80s on Rover P6 and P5...

Havn't had the fronts done yet but the fitter says they're about the same wear. Had new ones fitted to fronts when I bought the car as part of the deal, so they're 9,300 miles less worn

The pads' warning light is still on: here's the VAG (10.6.4) printout section prior to changing the rear pads

I see from the EOBD utiliity (Martin pls e-mail me for all my logs, don't have your addy and have only posted seven times before)
that this G200/G202 will show when there's a warning light on, which there is (check pads) along with the "Service Now" warning which I havn't yet reset

More info gratefully received. It's probably in a FAQ somewhere on this site but as yet havn't found it. Should I be doing a VCDS reset somewheres to turn off this warning in addition to cancelling DTCs?

Not worried about springing for the front pads too, but will be if it doesn't turn off the pads' warning!

    Cheers RichardSEL

Brake pad warning is not via control units so VCDS doesn't reset it. Rear pads do not have a pad wear warning, only front ones. So if warning light is on, the front pads are worn.
Pad wear warning light will only go out when new pads are fitted. Two year service is 30,000 km which is 18,750 miles not 20,000 miles.

Quick post to thank you for your quick reply

Only front pads monitored... hmmm Thats an advance from my 70s and 80s so-called "old crocks"((c) her indoors)
And shows, with moderate use, fronts last less than 30k...

    Just an update:
Did the front pads and warning light off.
Only the nearside front pad is monitored for wear by means of flying lead. It was that pad that showed the most wear. Double Hmmm...

This just leaves this odd one showing in Vag:

Just going to check again after standing overnight...

Yep, still the same. Codes 00446 and 00933 not shown in EOBD database

I would check fuses but since the layouts are wrong or documented as with a reversed diagram, that's not much help telling where to start. All the window motors work from both their controls as does the locking

    Any ideas anyone?

You seem to misunderstand how VCDS & coding works. "Yep, still the same. Codes 00446 and 00933 not shown in EOBD database"
VCDS gives the VAG 5 digit coding, eg. 00933 and tells you what the code means, 00933 - Electric Window Motor; Passenger Side (V148).
It even gives you a sub code, eg. 005 - No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation - Intermittent.

You won't find specific VAG codes in an EOBD list. The EOBD codes are only those that all European manufacturers have agreed to use. They are generic for all european vehicles and are not a good guide for diagnostics.

Your two codes are often triggered by someone disconnecting the battery, having a flat battery or jump starting a car.

To try to clear them. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes. Reconnect. Fully open and close each electric window to establish wide open/fully closed. Drive car. Rescan.

This should clear the codes. It may not. Sometimes these silly codes get stuck, in which case you just ignore them.

Even more helpful stuff from Martin...

Did as suggested and found following after about 10 mins disconnect of battery, re-connect, then a drive around for 10

Now can't see auto trans although status is still given as "OK"

Did you do the open and close windows trick. That should have sorted the window fault. Try again just using the driver door switches. Make sure windows hit the full open, wait a few seconds and then close. Do this a couple of times. Is it possible something is stopping the window closing fully, because that will upset it. What VCDS are you using because you shouldn't be losing communication.
Just a thought. Have you had any work done recently that might have disturbed any wiring ?

    Hi Richard,
where did you find the right brake pad for your car??
according to vcds, the part number is 3C0 614 095 M
i need to change my front ones

3C0 614 095 M is the cintroller, not the pads. You can't get part numbers using vcds.
Front pads are 5K0 698 151 followed by a letter. Cost about £75 from VW and half that from a factor like eurocarparts or GSF
