2002 Audi A6 Allroad 2.5tdi V6 Engine Knocking Noise

Hello To All

I am looking for you guys' expert help, I'm a newbie to this site.
Your forum site has come highly recommended.

I have a 2002 A6 Allroad 2.5tdi V6 Automatic with 116000 ish miles on the clock. I pulled over on evening for a bleather and upon starting the engine again a "LOUD"! knocking noise started from the engine bay, getting louder with pressing the accelerator! I tried to move the car forward but there was a huge loss of power.
I waited for the recovery truck and his idea was the turbo charger bearing had a bit of play and could be causing the propellers to be banging against the casing?
Personally i think it's a bit more than that? the fact he quoted me £700 for a new turbo and a couple of hundred for labour, i'd like to get some more advice before i say yes and later he tells me its not that and wants even more cash???
is this engine knocking a common thing for 2.5tdi v6 engines?
if you guys need anymore info, just fire away! thanks for any advice

Take the rocker covers off and look for worn cams and dropped lifters and rocker arms, common failure on the v6 engine due to poor quality oil used or Longlife servicing... Either way it's expensive. If the impeller was brocken you would have experienced engine "runaway" wich means the engine starts to run on it's own oil and revs to destruction as many folks paic and don't know how to stall the engine...

As this problem appears to have happened at start up you need to have the cam belt timing checked it may have jump a few teeth as well as inspecting the cams as Adam has posted. All turbos have movement in the shaft when cool and cold. Even brand new out of the box Garret turbo's have axial movement in the shaft, if they didn't they would seize when hot. Regards Peter

Same thing happened to my V6 It's the cams I would say the wear very badly after 100k and the cam followers fall out causing all sort of damage. you will need a full top end rebuild. If that is what happened to your engine, I have a fully rebuilt AYM engine for sale PM me if your interested.

Yeap and mine, went to the pub for a meal, came out, hard to start, loads of smoke and missfiring, no power, cams shot and 3 followers had dropped out on inspection.!! was getting a lot of backpressure through the turbo and popping, which went once i had refitted.
