Hi, hope someone can help, cutting a long story short, a dealer service advisor gave me totally wrong advise about the state of my rear discs and pads, and having just committed to spend as much as I could afford on a cambelt etc and a precautional water pump change and so decided to buy the discs and pads and have a go myself (used to get my hands dirty with old cars in the past) Well all was good until I tried to remove the large allen bolts that hold the pad carrier to the large casting to alow me to remove the discs
These bolts are VERY tight, I have long reach allen keys and the 8mm key needed has started to bend and still they wont budge, access is very limited due to the shape of the casting. Q what is the correct tool and metthod to undo these two bolts ?
    Thanx Rob.

Get some easing fluid on it and let it penertrate over night, then give it another go.

Also if you can, get some mole/vise grips and put them round the collar of the bolt head and use them as well as the allen bit to undo the bolt, this spreads the torque your putting into it and stops it rounding the allen head, plus you can get more power into it than just with the allen bit.

    Hi Rob
You need to get a 8mm allen key socket for your socket set, an ordinary allen key is not going to shift it, good luck.

you can fit the discs without removing the carrier

if you loosen the old disc and waggle it then it can be removed with the carrier in place

now offer the new disc up and slide the disc into the carrier

it will stick out but simply tap with a rubber hammer and the disc will go in

you will not damage the disc if done correctly

if unsure try with the old disc to get your confidence

    then whack it lol

Wow thats great, I removed the retaining screw and treid to do just that, I obviously didn't move the disc about enough when I had a go to see how easy it would be on the one wheel I tried. I will have another go at the weekend thanx Rob.

with the old disc in place give it a good smack so loosens on the hub

now you will see it moves a lot

lever the old disc out by hand so your disc is in the carrier and you lever as if trying to bend the disc and it will come

now if this makes sense you will see the angle it comes out at

put the new disc at this angle and offer it into the carrier

simply hit the disc or push it back the same way and bingo

now you may mark the disc slightly but it will not affect it and if done correctly it will not mark at all

Thanx for the added detail, because without it, looking at it for the first time you would never think it could be done without prior removal of the brake pad carrier.
Thanx again will post and let you know how it goes.
