has my did been stitched on 05 caravelle??

my dad recently bought a Caravelle t5 2.5 tdi on an 05 plate, he bought it with 130,000
on the clock, he's had a few probs with it i.e loss of power that returns if he switches it off then on again, which i understand is quite a common fault.
The one thing that is starting to worry him is that its using a lot of oil, and its fuel consumption is just ridiculous!.
Just wanted to ask if this is typical for the model/year etc?.. Or is more likely that the engine has done at least twice what it is showing on the clocks? and my dad has been tucked right up (which is my suspicion!!)
Any input would be greatfully recieved!

It probably needs a turbo rebuild which is no doubt why it was sold as on the T5 they are very difficult to get at.
