Do i need a security code for VAG COM?

Hi all,
Youll have to excuse my ignorance as im new to this whole concept. Basically, im having cruise control fitted onto my Golf Plus, not through a dealer. The garage has access to some form of VAG COM but they have told me that they will need a security code in order to make any adjustments, such as activating Cruise Control, and this can only be gained from the dealers.

Is this true?
Ive made some enquiries with a local dealer who dont have a clue about what im refering too. They say they just hook the car up to the computer and dont need a security or "Master Code" Could this be due to them being actual dealers using geniune equipement?

Can any clarify what i need in order for the non dealer garage to sucessfully hook up to my Plus.

Do the garage have a genuine copy of VCDS and is it up to date. Really you should post an autoscan from the car. I know that is a problem as the equipment isn't yours. Perhaps they can scan the car and give you the log on a usb drive so that you can upload it here. I am surprised the garage don't know how to use the equipment.

Ive just spoken to them, they have the most up to date, full version of VCDS but say in the past, they have come across this problem with VW's when accessing the ECU. Getting a scan shouldnt be a problem, ill see when i get get there and have it done. Maybe tomorow. Is the scan file a document file i can copy n paste?

Yes. It will be a log generated in notepad as a .txt

ok. ive arranged for a go in the morning and will report back. without doing anything to the car as such, is there anything i can attempt to see if changes can be made without this code i may or may not need? as a tester in prep for the actual cruise control installed.

Nothing to see but the log will show how their copy of VCDS is set up. From that I may be able to suggest what to do.

Ok, heres the results of this mornings scan. Afterwards, we cleared all the errors. As ive only had the car a few weeks, the history in the car is all new to me too. Next time we connect to the VCDS we can tell if there is any ongoing issues that need address.

Martin, while looking about on the VDCS program, i was shown the bit about the pass code. Its from the Coding Login and it brings up a screen like this.



ive been told that without the code, you cant make adjustments, but while search the threads, ive seen one about an Audi using the code 12345.

We also had a look about to see where the option was for the cruise control but couldnt find it. Could this be because the stalk isnt installed yet?

wrong login in search dis and cruise retro fit on this forum for all the info you need to encode address 16 and enable cruise in address 01


go to address 01 enter 11463 for login and then go to address 16 change bye 4 for cruise

make sure your vcds has a workshop name and number in the identification window to allow code changes for control units
