Yet, in the US the A7 is supplied without rsap, and instead requires the use of the dash mounted SIM for data alongside the standard Bluetooth hands free phone connection for calls. Which then generates some longing for the European solution from US drivers with Blackberries who would prefer to use rasp.

It may be different hardware and those of us with an issue may only be a small minority, but I can't understand why Audi claim there is no alternative to rasp or dual sim when this obviously isn't the case.

Hi A8. I'm not quite sure who that previous post is aimed at, but we have been over that ground already... In fact, we are all going round in circles, but let's keep moaning until it's fixed !!!

It is illegal to clone a SIM in the UK. This is to prevent fraud. It would be naive to suggest no other country has similar fraud or legislates against it. It is also extremely difficult to clone a modern SIM.

The UK operators did not offer cloned SIMs, they offered an elaborate system of multiple unique SIMs and network-level diverts. A "master" number, the one you publish, is diverted to the underlying (hidden) number of one of the two SIMs on the account. The user decides which device the master number diverts to by sending various codes to the network. The network uses the CLI of the master number when either of the SIMs is used to make a call.

There is no law or hacking issue preventing the networks from issuing "dual" or "multi" SIM as described above for voice calls. They ditched it as the service was originally marketed at the car-phone user market, and nobody uses them anymore, they use BT handsfree instead!

I deal with mobile phone networks on a professional basis and can tell you that none of Vodafone, Orange, O2 or T-Mobile offer dual SIM in the UK, with some of them ditching it years ago. This is not, therefore, a solution to the problem.

Now, to RSAP. I admit that the mobile market is very fast moving, and I suspect that Audi probably first started working on this version of MMI years ago. In the meantime, RSAP died, at about the same time Apple became the largest company in the world, and Nokia suddenly realised they weren't very important any more.

What Audi have delivered is a system about 4 years out of date, which is an eternity in technology terms. I understand that these things take time to develop, but if they cannot keep up with the technology, they need to give up trying to be clever.

Interesting and new models such as new a3 have addressed the issue allowing 500 contacts on the sim to allow both handsfree and online services to work
as well as audi connect revised and internet radio app

I suspect the fix will be along the lines of increasing the number of contacts but cant confirm

The information I have is quite clear regarding data protection for uk market and therefore I do not doubt it

Having given you all as much information as possible I shall once again update if I find out any more info providing its official

Funny isn't it, the US want our system and we want theirs... Here's an idea, make it an option in the menu. It's not like they need to worry about making the options any more boggling to the layman than they already are!

They just don't do RSAP in the US. Clearly a very much bigger market than the UK, but interesting that they actually bothered to research this for them!

I'm not quite sure what this hacking issue is, but they may have missed the point.. I don't want to use the data on my iPhone to drive the MMI. I want to use the SIM slot to drive MMI and my iPhone for calls. I cannot see how this could possibly result in any kind of exposure to hacking, and clearly it does not raise a risk in the USA where precisely this arrangement is catered for.

If Audi think that the main issue is allowing more contacts when using the in-dashboard SIM, then I fear that they will disappointed when they install that solution, because the moaning won't stop.

The issue is being able to use data services and phone in the car, and then being able to jump out of the car and for the phone to continue to work standalone.

That works perfectly on an rSAP phone.

On a non-rSAP phone it doesn't, you have to jump through one hoop or another and that's a pain.

The most practical solution, given that they won't want to change hardware, will be to change the software such that bluetooth is not disabled when the SIM is inserted, enabling us to use handsfree Bluetooth to our phones and have a separate SIM for data.

If that can be done, Audi should do it.

If it can't be, Audi should tell us.

    But the silence is deafening.

The sim solution is to allow the bt to stay active so a data sim stays in the slot but also I suspect the contact number will increase

I have my information from a very good source and taking comments from members I have raised the subject and received very good information regarding apple and audi working on a fix as its more than just the sim its also involves apple's security of there handsets

Like I have said Audi uk pushed this as urgent and the two manufacturers are working on a solution

The problem is not solely with the 5f its also the iphone and the security of the phone itself hence they are both working on this

I see what they are trying to do, they are trying to get an RSAP equivalent working with the iPhone. I totally understand why Apple might be worried about the security of this solution.

However, what most of us are very happy to put up with is buying a data SIM for the MMI whilst at the same time allowing the iPhone to be used for calls, using the BT handsfree profile. This, surely, is a simple fix for Audi: They disable the bit of code in their software that cuts off bluetooth as soon as you push a SIM in to the dash...(as with the US versions of the car)

You cannot fault the Germans for being thorough, but let's get the workaround first, and fix it properly later?

Edit to say, my workaround will work for any mobile phone with BT handsfree that is unable to establish RSAP, not just iPhone.

I am very angry with Audi because I was not warned about the incompatibility of iPhone with Audi until I took delivery of the car.

There is no point going over old ground here, but I am fed up with reading throughout about how Audi sales people say it is Apples' intransigence over their systems.

I suggest that Apple should do the same that Audi have been doing to them.

That is that Apple should tell their customers NOT to buy an Audi as it is incompatible with their phones.

Let us see how quickly Audi respond to that as clearly responding to customers complaints (see how old this thread is!) isnt their top priority, but being dissed by the biggest brand in the world will make them sort this out in days.

    One very angry Audi customer
