Hi, I have a w reg polo and over the summer it has problems starting if the engine is hot.
it will start every time in the morning or if it has been left for a long time but if i stop off to get some petrol or call at services etc it will not start.
It seems like it is trying to fire but wont catch, when it does eventually start after a few mins the revs can drop to as low as 100rpm and then if left they start to race and will hold at 3000 rpm.

I really have no idea what this could be and neither did my usual garage so if anyone has had a similar problem please let me know how you got round it, it would be a big help.

    Thanks!

I should start off by saying that i know hee haw about the mechanical side of cars...

However, I have a 2000 Polo 1.4 with exactly the same problem. Engine starts fine when cold, but is a nightmare to start from warm. A garage i took it to ran VAGCOM which showed that there is problem with the coolant sensor or something similar. He lifted the bonnet and pointed to the part that needs replaced. Only about £20 apparently. Haven't got round to fixing it yet of course.

    Hi

this did solve the problem and now starts all the time - The only thing was that quite a bit of coolant comes out and i think some got onto apart which when the car had heated up made a funny smell - this now appears to have gone but anybody trying this i would suggest making sure you had something to stop any coolant going over pipes/ engine etc
