To connect my ipod to my polo 1.2 E - can I take the radio out and plug in a simple lead at the back- or do i need the £89 gizmo with a box?

You could perhaps buy an AUX input kit which is about £30. That lets you connect the head phone output of the Ipod to the radio. You wont be able to change tracks or anything via the radio controls with that though. You'd have to check with the parts guys at your local VW dealer to see it that can be fitted to your radio model of radio too.

You can't get an AUX kit, but VW do an ipod kit. Plugs into the back of the radio into the CD changer plug and then you run the cable to the glovebox or something. This also needs one wire connecting to an earth, which is a simple job anyway.

The VW one is quite pricey I believe, can't remember the exact price but you're better off getting an Xcarlink. Pretty much identical system but it allows you to control the music from either the ipod itself or the radio, and has additional wiring to let you keep the OEM CD changer if you have one fitted.

Alternatively, you can get one of those FM transmitter things. Personally though, I think they are complete rubbish. I bought an Xcarlink.
