I think the wiring runs through a loom within the headlight. The multiplug on the headlamp will carry the earth back along with the supply wires. Possibly an earthing point under the dash somewhere.
It might be worth trying new lamps if the main beam is OK? Uses the same earth

I had a look at an old loom, it appears like the earthing point is to lhs of glove box at door pillar. Improvements can be gained by fitting ( I think Osram night something? they are a whiter light) when I find the proper name again I will post it up
    Regards
    Michael.

    Michael.

Nightbreakers? rings a bell, not used them myself.

I don't think there are relays on the 80 lights, fitting higher watt lamps is bad for the switch as it carries the extra current. Yours may have suffered from using the 100/80's.
Best solution all round is to make up a sub loom with relays, even with standard lamps this will improve things a lot as they will get a decent supply direct from the battery. If you choose to use the upgraded lamps the switch will not be carrying any extra load, the relays handle it instead.
