    Hi there,

Apologies if my newbie format is a little off key....

Garage are trying to relieve me of a cool £100+ to change the High Level Central Rear Brake Light on my 04 A6 2.5TDi Avant.

Well prepared to have a go myself and buy 2nd hand parts off ebay or wherever.

    Just a few idiot questions:
    1. Can one replace just the bulbs individually, or does the whole light assembly require replacement ?
    2. How and where do I find out the part no. so that I do not purchase the wrong component ?
    3. Where can I find simple instructions about going about this job ?

Grateful for any advice received !!

    Cheers,

    Marky

On the Avant, it's an LED unit. The individual LEDs are not replaceable - you replace the whole unit.

I think (although I'm not an MOT tester) that it'll pass an MOT unless more than half the LEDs are not working.

    It's quite straightforward to remove:
-carefully lever out the two red square caps either side of the light.
    -unscrew the bolts.
-press in the retainers and remove the unit from the tailgate.

I have no idea how much the light unit should cost, but considering it contains a few resistors and about 10 LEDs, I can't see Audi wanting more than £20 or so for it (That's my complete guess)
