Golf GTI noisy gearbox in Reverse ??

I have a 2000 Golf Cabriolet with an AGG engine. The car runs lovely and the gearbox is quiet and smooth but when I select reverse and either reverse or just let the car roll back with the clutch still depressed, the gearbox makes quite a rattly noise. Is this common and what is it exactly?

When I saw this in the Mk4 section I was confused but then I read your text and it made it clear. Your car is a Mk3, not a MK 4 and the MK 3 has the 020 box and these can eat the reverse gear. The only solution is to pull the box and strip it down so a new reverse gear can be fitted.

Many Thanks for the info. I will get on and do that. This car seems to confuse staff at VW and German Swedish etc whenever I need parts for it until I say it's a cabriolet.
