Hi.. has anyone had any experience with changing the main (green) engine temp sensor? I just got one to replace as mines giving false data, and over fueling now and then causing emissions light to pop up occasionly. I can see the sensor, but can only just get a couple of fingers to it, let alone get a purchase on it to change it! I have tried moving cables out of the way as best I can, but still no joy. :-( Any tips would be much appreciated. Would like to get it in this afternoon if poss.

    Thanks...

    Andy

    What car ?

    What engine ?

Most are held in via a plastic 'c' clip, once that is removed it should simply pull out.

Car is a 2002 Golf V5, but the problem is gaining access to the sensor itself to remove it. Any ideas?

It is in the thermostat housing above the gearbox on the end of the head, item 9. Firstly, release the coolant pressure when cold by removing the expansion bottle cap. The plug is awkward to remove from the CTS, you push the plug towards the CTS as you gently lever the catch with a small screwdriver. The catch is easy to break and a new plug is tricky to fit so be careful. Then you pull the plastic circlip (2) holding the CTS in and it will fall out, probably leaving the "O" ring (1) in place and you will need to fish it out.

Hi there.. I can see how the main engine temp sensor is held in place to remove, but the fact is... I cant get at it to remove it on this model. I can only just about get my fingers to it, but not enough to get hold of it to firstly remove connecter plug, then pull clip to change. There must be some tricks of the trade here surely? My cooling fan is cutting in too often, and I am sure it is this sensor that is faulty, as VW technician said it was making the car think the temp was minus 40 deg. C at one point whilst plugged into the comms port. I am also thinking of changing the fan control (blue two pin plug) under rad? Is this also one that goes wrong? if so what would be the outcome of any faullts? My car has its MOT next tues and I dont want it overfueling and fail emissions check etc. Exhaust emissions light has popped up now and then... currently its not up though.

Any further help... mainly with how I can extract the dreaded sensor... need kiddies hands I reakon!

    Thanks... Andy

They are tricky to get at, use long nosed pliers.
