Has anyone any bright ideas on how to make the dipstick more easily readable?

My only thought is to paint the relevant area white, because as it is it's almost impossible to read - or is it just me?

You're right, it's stupid to make it out of black plastic. Not sure however if you'd be able to guarantee that white paint would stick to the end if you dipped it and allowed it to dry thoroughly. If it flaked off or if the hot oil melted it, you could gets bits of paint floating around in your sump. The oil strainer ought to keep it out of the pump but I wouldn't fancy it.

Yes, the paint flaking off had occurred to me - it would need a paint designed for plastic, which I know is available, but even then it would always be in the back of my mind. At the moment I lay it on a piece of clean tissue, but it's still vague. 0 out of 10 here VW !
