2.0 tdi poor fuel consumption Audi a6

Since 2000 I have purchased 3 a4 tdi multitronics and achieved an average of 42 mpg plus on all these cars. My previous an A4 s line was capable of achieving towards 50 mpg on a 30mile run without trying to be economical. I have now purchased an A6 2.0 tdi multitronic which is averaging only 33 mpg and even with the steadiest of driving and no air con reaches only 39 mpg. I drove the a4 72 miles to collect the A6
And recorded 46 mpg. When returning with the a6 I obtained 36 mpg.
I purchased this car on the factory systistics showing a combined of 48 mpg and my old a4 only 46 mpg combined. Why am I losing 10 mpg when the specs say I should gain 2 mpg.
Hoping a6 owners will have the answer.
    A6 tdi 2.0 multitronic 136 bhp 151 emissions.

Blocked air filter and injector cleaner required if it's running ok.

I agree that you have a problem but I'd be surprised if the official figures were anything near what you can get in practice.

I moved from an A4 1.9 TDi (averaged 48mpg for me) and went to an A6 2.0 TDi which has averaged 44 so far, which I was actually quite pleased with considering it's a bigger, heavier car. That's all done on long runs, on a short run I can be down at 30, and late 30s on a long, fast run.

I seem to remember that the Multitronic's mpg is worse than the manuals (which both mine were) so I don't think you will ever average 48 in real life.

Good service will improve MPG, do a fault scan see anything is stored in system. A6 is heavier car than A4, so MPG will be lower.
Do you take reading from OBC?

My 2.0 TDI manual will show on OBC 48-52MPG on 20mile motorway journey, taking it steady 70mph.

Just check when last time oil, air filter and diesel filter was changed. Renewing these parts will improve mpg a bit

    hi
I would struggle to reach 40mpg on a direct 20 mile run driven with care. I am taking them from the obc.
Car has 13000miles on the clock and need a service at 18000 miles. long life.
This car is the 136 bhp tdie auto supposed to be super efficient and very low emitions. 151 co2

    Thanks will try that.
What really bugs me i am trying hard with the A6 to achieve 39 mpg. Where i thrashed the A4 and got 46 mpg. Yet official figures state a higher mpg for the A6.
i dont expect to reach the official figures but did expect it to equal the A4 with all the Audi hype on how good the A6 is supposed to be.
    Cheers paul

    Hi
What year 2.0 tdi. If mine was averaging 44 mpg i would be pleased. Its only the late 2008 on that has the super efficient 136 bhp engine and if yours is before this model how come you can achieve 44 mpg. my average 33 mpg on the obc.
    Thanks for the replies everyone.
