passat/audi alert between rev counter & speedo

i have a 1998 (S) VW Passat Syncro 2.8 V6, i used to own an Audi A4, they both seem to have the same bit between the speedo & rev counter that alerts you if oil or washer level goes low etc. in big icons, on the Audi you could press something that would scroll through these alerts pausing at each one for about 2 seconds, can this be done on the Passat ?
