I have found much helpful info on this problem but a question arises.....

On our Mk4 Golf 1.6se, with electric windows, the driver side front window has today dropped into the door and won't rise. From what I read it sounds like the clips have failed. With genuine kit costing around £50 and pattern parts (just the clips) around £17, will I need the full kit?
Will be looking this afternoon to see what has happened cos we need to get the glass up for security and weather reasons, but any comments will be appreciated....Can I jam the glass up temporarily?

I had this same problem with mine, both the drivers side and passenger side went within a couple of weeks of each other.

I would recommend getting the full window regulator kit, if i remember rightly they cost £42 from a VW dealer.

Pretty simple job as well to do, anyone with a bit of common sense and general car knowledge will be able to complete both within an hour, alot of forums have step by step instructions on how to replace them.

Thanks for that. What did you do with the door lock module? Did you drill out the rivets and then replace them? Are the rivets part of the kit?

you dont need to drill out the lock that stays where it is and everything can move round it.

i will have a look for the step by step instructions i used and post the link for you

Here's the link I used, as you go through it step by step it will all make sense.

You can take it all out with the lock attached to the door part that comes away.

The new clips that come with the kit are metal with a small plastic section, this is because the old 'all plastic' clips broke too easily.

    Good luck

Trying to load a picture of a spring i found in the door when i got the door panel off, bit like a spring from a wooden clothes peg with one leg longer than the other, about 40mm long. Where does it come from? ...and why cant i load an image from photobucket??

If you can strip, fit a repair kit and rebuild two doors in an hour I would love to see you do that. It takes me an hour and a half to do one side!
