    Hi All,

I've just upgraded to the new iPhone 4, which works well in my 56 plate Passat which is retrofitted with the latest OEM Bluetooth and RNS510 Version B with firmware 900 – but I am considering having the MDI retro fitted but have a couple of questions:

    1) Does anyone know if this will charge the iPhone

    2) Will it recognise the iPhone as an iPod?

    Regards, Bill

It will recognise it but won't charge it. I used to use my iphone, but got fed up plugging it in and out, so I bought an old video iPod with a dodgy click wheel. Cost me £20 and works perfectly with the car as I never really need the click wheel and it keeps it charged!

    Hi Bill,

Yes and yes, I had it fitted to mine. The only problem I had is that the MDI port is in the glove box so my phone looses signal in there.

I got round it by just using my iPod in the box

I've read that the ipnone doesn't charge with MDi.

To save messing about I picked up an ipod classic, I have every bit of music I've managed to pick up in the last 42 years, OK probably 36 years as I really didn't have my own music until I was 6.

So that's just over 100gb of music.

My classic just sits in the car, keeps fully charged and only comes out for updating and adding new stuff.

    Cheers

Thanks's for the replies, I've got a load of music (probabably more than I need) on the RNS510 harddrive already, I was really after a way of charging the phone without loads of leads all over the car, the option of more music, video etc was an added bonus but it is the £250 outlay just for have things tidy....

Is the MDI unit plug & play or will I have to code anything? if coding is required anyone know anyone / decent garages near Portrsmouth that will do the coding?

    Cheers

My brother retro fitted one into his mk5 gti along with an RNS510. Doesn't charge his and a friends mk6 with rcd510 and mdi doesn't charge his phone either.

I have an afermarket headunit and it won't charge the iPhone either. Video iPod with 120gb music and your sweet!

If you want to charge your phone, you could have an iPod lead hard wired into the car and have the lead come out the ash tray or cubby box on drivers side.

The MDI charges my ipod touch OK.

There is a 5v ign feed to the MDI for charging, so it must be a software issue on the iphones, i have had no issue with a hacked ipod touch first gen running later software.

You can buy a small in line power converters on eBay for about £7. This takes the normal 12v fed to 5v. Where alot of after Market docks and in car iPod systems don't charge them normally, this changes it so they will charge. Search eBay iPhone 5v
