On motorway last night when I started to lose power. Then the car started making a horrible farting sound, and a lot of vibration from 14 - 15,000 revs. Bit of vibration through the pedals too.

Didn't want to stop in case it died on me, so managed to get it home. AS long as I could ignore the noise (turned radio up) and give it a bit more gas, it was ok.

Whatever it is seems to be at the front end, just in front of cabin, if that makes any sense? Thinking of taking it to Kwik Fit for a 'free' exhaust check.

If I can identify the problem, I'm thinking there's a hole somewhere, and I can't bandage it, are the parts cheap and easy to fit?

    Cheers.

It may not be the exhaust at all, but kwik FIT will
say you need a whole new system anyway.

If you cant determine the actual fault yourself, you'd
be better taking it to a mechanic.

    Regards
    Jim

My thoughts exactly. Tried thier 'free' brake check years ago - £250 the b*stards had off me.

One thing, over the last year or so I've noticed, when just having turned engine off, a hissing coming from the rear of the engine. Thought a split hose, but never been able to find anything. Yesterday it was bloody loud as anything though. Could this be owt to do with it?

The car is a 2003 (January) 2.0 SE petrol. The engine is the ALT.

Just had another look and there is a narrow hose, just under the expansion tank, that has a sticky greenish covering, bit like a calcium deposit.

Bugger. Turns out not to be a holy exhaust but my mate suspects a coil problem or summat. The engine is missing.

Sounds even worse (more expensive) than the sodding exhaust.

No 3 pencil coil has jacked it in,that's it. Lad at local garage put it on computer today. Also picked up faulty brake light switch and duff temperature switch.

Been quoted £34 + VAT for a new coil from A1 Motor Stores, which don't seem too bad.

    Are they easy to fit?
