A3 1.9tdi cutting out over bumps - HELP!!

Folks -

As above - my 2005 Sportback mysteriously judders/cuts out at times - the common denominator being bumps or potholes - happens 90% of the time. It's not a slow loss of power - it's almost like the brake is coming on!

Anyone got any ideas? Have checked connections for injectors etc and cleaned them but no joy.

prone to internal error for voltage supply relay output from ecu
prone to poor earths engine ecu under nsf headlight
if the can is dropping out like this it would suggest a faulty node contact in the loom or loose pins at the ecu but consider the voltage and earths, if ok then your left with can problems or can end resistor faulty within the engine ecu

00188 - Control Circuit 1; Relay for Supply Voltage Terminal 50
010 - Open or Short to Plus - Intermittent this is cranking output to starter

the voltage supply and starter relay share the same multiblock connector inside the engine bay and are not unknown to become corroded

this is the most current fault with time and date and only gateway gives a clue

other control units that are priority on drive train are airbag and abs but only abs sees the coms drop out as gateway is the central hub for all the networks

so ecu drops out abs loses coms and gateway

this indicates the network is ok but again the ecu kicks back in without any errors so this points to poor connection either internally or externally

you need to inspect the ecu connections and wiggle them without damaging the contacts, try running the engine and pull on the loom

if the ecu voltage drops off then can will lose coms so which one is causing it, normally when the can is corrupted within a control unit it will not work at all, if one of the wires is faulty then single wire will allow the control unit to operate but if the voltage drops then it will stop the control unit until the voltage returns

Totally stuck. The car only judders and stalls if I have my foot on the throttle over the bumps, if I coast over them using the clutch in then it continues over them as it normally would.

Sorry you are going to need to get stuck in and try the suggestions mentioned as I can only advise over the web.
Personally I would tap
Into the volt supply whilst driving and see if the voltage goes opencircuit when it cuts out as this will localise the fault
Your looking for dropped voltage or not dropped
If voltage is still present then check mvb 125 in address 19 for can comms or see if you can still access address 01 when it stalls
Its very difficult to explain but you need to start somewhere as vag com is a tool not the answer

Are all the terminals and main supply wires on the battery tight. Had this on an a2. someone had slackened the wrong nut for a battery change.

Sorry folks - i have committed the cardinal sin of asking for help and not posting when i got it sorted!

Two main problems, both of which seemed to contribute:

1) The main earth cable in the engine bay was corroded inside, you could pull it and the engine would stop dead.
2) This seemed to clear it but then the problem came back fairly quickly - there were fault codes for the engine speed sensor (G28) so replaced that but no joy
3) The wiring between the engine speed sensor and the ecu was completely replaced - this sorted it! (my mechanic said it was like looking for a needle in a haystack!)
