The recommended torque ( by INA bearing Co. maufacturer of clutch bearing) is 85Nm (63 ft.lb.) This was the torque supplied by INA for both a VW Polo 1.4 TDI Alternator bearing and for the MK5 Golf 1.9TDI Alternator ( Valeo 140A). The P/No. fpr the bearing is the same for both. Not sure about Passats. I too couldn't find this info on the internet and Emailed INA direct and got a swift reply . - Good Company ! I posted this info previously on the Golf MK5 forum.
Incidently the cost of this bearing from GSF was half that from VW dealer . The INA bearing P/No. was the same from both sources.

Why was it a pig to get off, did you not have the correct tool?

Thanks for the Torque setting . Your 85nm is obviously correct as you had it straight from the horses mouth so to speak. Did see it on a posting recently but could neither remember it or where it was so ended up on a US site through Google. 80nm will have to do this time.

    Caldirun.
Have the Laser splined tool but pulley was very tight. Finally shocked it free with a heavy mallet. Didn't have a proper tool to hold the viscous fan but managed with a chain wrench and a strip of DPC. The old pulley tests OK but clearly isn't as the tensioner is now more stable and the 'chirping' has gone. Will replace tensioner at 180k if it lasts till then.

I have removed my fan twice, once to replace the tensioner and again to replace the alternator pulley, I found no special tool was required just a hex key from the rear to remove the centre bolt!

I used a cheap chain wrench with a strip of plastic damp proof membrane to protect pully surface....... not ideal as handle of chain pulley broke off and remaining was pushed into flattened steel tube!!

Have since bought a Sealey AK604 oil filter strap wrench for use in future as mine was so tight. Bought from CCW tools, half price at £13.33 , very well made item.

You will be turning aux belt tensioner pulley nut anti clockwise which will release tension on the Aux. belt so that it can be taken off the Alt pulley. I keep my belt tied up to keep tension on the pulleys so that they remain in their correct grooves below.

Oil filter strap is then used on the smooth viscous fan pulley to hold it, enabling retaining bolt to be undone and subsequently tightened if like mine it was 'tight'.
