Take it that you have the 1.9 TDi. It is probably only doing it in the mornings when your engine is cold and the engine is running 'rich'?
Accelerating up-hill will demand even more fuel which could cause the engine to go into limp mode.
A dirty air filter will add another dimension and contribute further to the richness.

The faullty temp gauge could be caused by the G62 sensor which is failing and which also I understand determines fuel input. I say all this because I have a 2002 130 TDi Sport Est with a chip.... which....... if I accelerate out of our village on a cold morning will go into limp mode every time if I allow it to...... BUT.....since I fitted a new G62 sensor last weekend it has not gone into limp mode..... as I have tried. My consumption on a regular seven mile run of fast windy lanes has gone up from 47-49 to an easy 51-53. Also it does it with a noticeable improvement in performance.
My temperature gauge became erratic about a year ago but then seemed to settle down but clearly was not performing as it should.

My old G62 sensor was showing as a fault on a newly aquired VCDS. For what a G62 costs it is an item well worth replacing. My old G62 had a black body. The replacement is improved and green. From VW is approx £30 or Ebay £8. You will need sensor, o-ring and retaining clip.

There are many more on here more knowledgeable than I so perhaps it may be advisable to consider their solutions first!

Should also have mentioned the following.

Having initially searched in vain for the site of the G62 sensor and removed engine cover, turbo pipes etc Mrs Chipped2 decided she needed the car so a hasty replacement of parts was done and a 'trip around the block' to make sure all was OK. Over the two miles the car went into limp mode several times but worst of all braking was poor on first push....hard pedal and even worse on second push and solid with very little retard on third...!

'Limp' was easily sorted... dip clutch....switch off and restart...(but only on a straight road ), back home. The culprit was a small bore shiny black plastic Vacuum? pipe .....clipped to the plastic large bore turbo pipe against the bulkhead...... that was detached from the rubber pipe to T-piece against the bulkhead too. Easily 'push-fit' replaced it cured all the symptoms but was so easily detached without realising. Same symptoms would happen if said pipe became porous or split. Think due to age.....pipe!....it may well be best to replace it all.

Anyone know where a roll can be bought?

With Crashers help later in locating the site of the G62 the new Sensor was replaced as stated in the previous post. Thanks again Crasher.

Always get a code read first and if possible a read of engine measuring block 011 under fast acceleration in 2nd & 3rd from 1000 to 4000 rpm.
