    Hi,
I'm a new member so please be gentle!
I have an '02 130 TDI on 110k miles which runs extremely well.
My question is that as a keen home mechanic I am considering replacing the Cambelt, tensioner, waterpump etc myself. Is this a DIY job or is it one of those tasks best left to the ********?.

It's quite straight forward but you need the locking kit that holds the cam and crank in alignment while the belt is being changed. It costs about £80 and you will pay about the same for the belt kit plus £20 if you change the water pump while you are on.

You will also the 'forked peg' that retains the tensioner hydraulic plunger in its compressed position.

My 130 PD is comming up to the 120K service too. Was thinking of maybe doing it myself. I have heard that the water pump originally fitted to these engines was weak and had been re-designed. It is possible that it has been changed before, but I have no idea. Does anyone know if VW keep records of what has been changed at services? If it has the newer standard fitted then maybe there will be no point in changing this too...??

Not sure if there is too much point in getting all the associated tooling if I will only be doing it once..

if its a dealer service that has been done in the past then they should record everything they have charged for and so the list would include the water pump if it was replaced etc.

Yes. I bought my cambelt kit off the Doncaster VW dealer who trades on eBay and he sent the right parts based on the reg number.

I have an AWX too, and did the cambelt/waterpump... etc myself.
The "hydraulic tensioner" in question is the one in the pictures if I'm not mistaken.
    Old and new tensioners attached.

    £600 .... for a cambelt??!!

Re: Water pump ... get is changed, it doesn't cost much extra, and the impeler on the water pump which is made out of plastic have known to crack and break apart on the older versions.

    Thats the fella.

    Was about £70 though !

Just as a note, when you buy the new one, it comes in the compressed position with the forked tool holding it there !
