I know Budget tyres are awful and can be dangerous.

BUT is there a huge difference between mid-range and premium tyres?

And what are people running on their cars here and what are the tyres like ?

When I bought my car it had Continentals on it.
I then changed the alloys and they cam with Avon ZZ3. No problems with them at all.
Once they were done I bought Kumho Ecsta KU31.
I based my decision on cost and used this site
    http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/

A ton of info and impartial too.

Like Darich, mine came on Continentals, Conti Sport 3s. They're excellent tyres, but a fraction harsh and noisy. As an experiment, about five months I swapped them for the Falken ZE912s I had on my previous car, and the Falkens are definitely smoother and quieter. They're also right up there with the Contis for grip and steering response. I think they will wear more in the long term, but that would be more than offset by the price differential.

The Falken ZE912 is an excellent tyre, well worth the money, and although it is technically a mid-range tyre, it's far from being a budget special.

I have Uniroyal Rainsport 2 all round on my car. It came with Michelin and to be honest, I find the Uniroyal ones better in the wet. I paid 130 each for them and am nothing but happy with them. Hope that helps. MMM

Mine is also on Avon ZZ3's. I don't think they are any worse than premium tyres

The only thing I found with the Avon ZZ3 tyres was the noise.

I need to qualify that though by saying I never noticed it when I had them on the car......so it wasn't all that bad.
But when I got the Kumhos I noticed the car was much quieter.

Grip wise they're fine (both the Avons and Kumhos) - I generally don't push the car that hard.

In fact with the quattro system and the new Kumho tyres I found traction in the snow to be very good. I like the Kumhos I currently have. When I bought 4No. 19" tyres it cost £422 fully fitted.

I also used tyrereviews.co.uk to make my decision on the best balance between price and performance. I just fitted Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas to my car a few days ago and first impressions are great! They have tons of grip in both wet and dry. Hopefully they will last a while too. I got them for just over £100 per tyre from mytyres.co.uk and got cashback from Quidco

Stuck with what it came with for now - ContiSport 3s on the front, Pirelli's on the rear. Seems fine in the dry - I've yet to try in properly in the wet.

Ran ContiSports on my Alfa for nearly ten years - never let me down. I'll probably go with Contis again when the time comes - they consistently get good write-ups for roadholding.
