Geo , welcome to the best VAG forum available, your situation is quite common and usually points towards sticking vanes in your turbo, this can give an overboost signal and cause the car to go into safe or limp mode until restarted. Some people try to have the turbo pulled apart and cleaned thoroughly and achieve some success but usually you will be looking for a new/ recon turbo.
Worth having a vagcom ( vcds) plugged into your cars' diagnostic port to give a scan and offer you some fault codes before you open your wallet.

But unfortunately now you will have little idea if your Air Mass Meter (MAF) is at fault as you have unplugged it and now you WILL have an AMM/MAF code whether it is faulty or not…

Up until production of June 97, the sensor was inside the ECU. If your ECU has a vacuum pipe going to it, this is where the sensor is.

I don’t think it is possible to buy the sensor, you will have to talk to a specialist ECU repairer or open it up, look at the sensor and Google the numbers you find on it.

Try this method for unsticking your turbo.

As I said I have started using bio-diesel and the limp mode problem has went away.
