remote keyfob programming for 03 Passat

Hi

I am trying to program the remote on one of the keyfobs for my father's 03 Passat. It stopped working (I think the battery died) and I have replaced the battery, but the car doesn't recognise the keyfob.

Followed the procedure on the Ross-tech wiki to use the VAGCOM:

When I go to adapation and "Read", it says it is only bound to the one remote. If I change the number to "2" and press "Test" it just sits there and greys out the "Save" option, so I can't actually bind it to the key.

The procedure suggests clearing the remotes from the system and trying to reprogram them, but I am reluctant to do this as at the moment I still have one working keyfobs and I don't want to have 0 working keyfobs!

Has anyone tried this before and had success?
