Hi. My 2001 115 TDi is in the garage today for it's MOT. I've been told that it has passed but that the brake performance is poor. He suspects the vacuum pump. He told me that these cost about about £255 new, plus labour of course. It's an independent Audi garage and i think they know their stuff. He asked me if i had noticed the performance being down as this also provides the fuel pressure. I haven't noticed any loss of performance but i suppose the brakes have been feeling a bit more 'wooden' lately. I put this down to the fact that i needed new rear discs due to corrosion.

My question is whether it is worth trying to obtain a secondhand or refurbished vacuum pump? The car has done 161k miles and is in excellent condition, fully maintained. I plan to keep the car for a long time. Also, i have some basic mechanic skills. Is this something i could easily change myself, i.e. unbolt old one and bolt on new one, or is it more involved than this?

    Thanks for any advice?

Just rang Euro Car Parts and I've bought this off them for 225 incl VAT and delivery. Not sure if this is a good price or not but certainly cheaper than dealer quoted. Just need to work out if Ivan fit it easily myself now? Can anyone help me..... please?

This is my final call for help!

Can anyone tell me how easy or difficult it is to try and fit the vacuum pump that has now been delivered to me and is sitting on my desk? I have provisionally booked the car it at the garage and he said it'll be one hours labour but as i've already spent a fair it i wondered whether i could fit this myself? I also like to try some jobs if i am able to do them.
