Oil Warning Light Flashes

Hey Guys, you help would be appreciated!

Car is: 2001 Mk 4 Golf 1.8T

The oil warning light comes on and flashes, warning in display reads (Oil Pres Stop Motor) The engine has oil in it and sounds perfectly normal no rattles etc associated with low oil pressure.

Whats the significance of the flashing rather than being on all the time like most cars?

Worth pointing out that the light does come on and go off intermitently.

Low oil pressure ! Replace oil pump and do not drive it any further until problem is sorted or you may have the wrong oil in the engine and the sensors dont like it, or it could be a duff oil sensor probe.
