hi all, i have just bought a 1.9 tdi quattro a4 1997 , here are the problems, first the flexi pipe part of the cat is blowing quite bad, there is a rattly noise when you press the clutch in when idling -we guess thrust bearing? also there is no power feels like its only got about 10bhp !! the mpg computer screen on the dash slowly goes from bright to dim all the time weird, dashboard lights are very dim anyway any adjustment? lastly feels as tho it pulls to the right, any ideas on fixing these problems or the cause?
i also just had the codes erased and 1 wont go which is the fuel temp sensor ... any help pleeease

o 1 more thing sometimes when u press the brake it feels like the abs is coming on ..weird

Hi and welcome to the site!

Now then, 'Flexi pipe blowing' you'll need to replace it. It will be a whole new down pipe, or take it to an exhaust garage and get it chopped off just after the flexi. Or, get the whole downpipe done, so its a decat like mine. Also this makes it easier on the turbo an it spools up quicker, releasing some horseys!

'Rattly noise' on clutch. Not sure on this yet, mine does the same, a brand new clutch kit is about 160quid from europarts.

'Mpg computer' Take the dash out an just make sure that the screen for the mpg is in properly, it will be like a metal case with 4-6 prongs sticking through the circuit board which are then twisted slightly so they are firmly held, just use a pair of pliers. Dash lights might be blown so get som LED's off ebay and stick them in makes a nice difference. Also the left knob under the clock is the control for the dash lights, turn to the right to turn them up.

And the brake problem, sounds the same as mine again, the rear abs sensors/rings need cleaning or replacing. Also if they are really bad or if there is a droning noise it means you need the bearings done

    Hope that all helps!!

thanks for your help, i am going to get a new cat for about £70 off ebay, the clocks lights were turned down so i just turned them up lol what does the right hand nob do when u turn it if anything?also how do u remove any of the dash board parts if i need to replace bulbs etc ?
will get the abs sensors checked but no warning light or code shows for this.
will also be changing the clutch.

as for the lack of power a new fuel temp sensor will be fitted today and hopefully this will solve the problem will post results later

Sweet, glad to be of service lol!

To get the clocks out you will need to pull off this cover....

Under it should be two screws, not sure what type as mine didnt have them in there.

Then pull it out from the top, you'll need to wiggle a bit. There are two thing plugged in the back, you need to unclip them before they will come out.

And you will need these type of bulb/LED

The knob on the right will reset the trip computer and also is used when you are resetting the service reminder thing.

Might be worth changing the fuel filter too, as it is normally neglected as a service part. It's something i need to do soon too.

The ABS sensor? I think they are push fit. You will need to push them out from the inside.
Headlight Conversion, 2x8000k HID kits, De-cat downpipe, .216 Nozzles Boost Gauge, Colour changed on climate control and all buttons, LED instrument cluster, LED number plate lights, LED rear/brake lights, Lowered 40mm on SPAX springs. Soon to have GT1749VA

Hmm, not sure on that one. Only thing i can think of is trying to fit a normal socket over it. If not you will need to speak to audi an see if they know more about it. I will have a look at mine tomorrow an see whats what.

well i gotr the security bolt off using a star socket and a dremel lol, audi wanted £400 for a set of 3 security sockets. changed the fuel temp sensor which got rid of that code but i still have 1 code left on it which is intake manifold pressure deviation, and is causing limp mode !! have changed all the vacuum hoses and no better so rule out leaky hoses. next thing i want to try is to remove the egr and manifold/turbo and check for carbon clogging any1 tried this or any other ideas please?
