I've had my 2007 GT TDi 140 for a few months now, and need a couple of tyres.

When I test drove the Golf, it had 4 Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres, but on collection the dealer had fitted 2 new fronts (they were advisories when they put a new MOT on). They are however probably one of the cheapest tyres available – "Wanli" – so I therefore have two relatively new 'cheapies' on the front, and two 2mm 'premiums' on the rear.

Despite my initial concern over the budget Wanli's they're 'OK', but definitely don't have a very precise feel in the corners, and slip under hard acceleration. I don't drive with a lead right foot (honest!) but I was used to much more grip on my old Audi A4 TDi 130 Sport which had Continental Sport Contact 3 all round. Maybe it's just me, but I also think there's a lot of road noise off the Wanli tyres.

So... what would your tyre suggestions be? I can't afford 4 new tyres right now – timing belt due in April – but I am happy to pay for premium (Michelins or Continentals I guess) if that's the right thing to do. Was considering putting the 4 month old Wanli's on the rear and the new ones up front too – does that make sense? It's either that or leave the Wanli's on the front so they wear out quicker.....

Any advice greatly appreciated!
