I've had my 2007 GT TDi 140 for a few months now, and need a couple of tyres.

When I test drove the Golf, it had 4 Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres, but on collection the dealer had fitted 2 new fronts (they were advisories when they put a new MOT on). They are however probably one of the cheapest tyres available – "Wanli" – so I therefore have two relatively new 'cheapies' on the front, and two 2mm 'premiums' on the rear.

Despite my initial concern over the budget Wanli's they're 'OK', but definitely don't have a very precise feel in the corners, and slip under hard acceleration. I don't drive with a lead right foot (honest!) but I was used to much more grip on my old Audi A4 TDi 130 Sport which had Continental Sport Contact 3 all round. Maybe it's just me, but I also think there's a lot of road noise off the Wanli tyres.

So... what would your tyre suggestions be? I can't afford 4 new tyres right now – timing belt due in April – but I am happy to pay for premium (Michelins or Continentals I guess) if that's the right thing to do. Was considering putting the 4 month old Wanli's on the rear and the new ones up front too – does that make sense? It's either that or leave the Wanli's on the front so they wear out quicker.....

    Any advice greatly appreciated!

Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta, assuming you have 17" rims? Roughly £100 each fitted from www.mytyres.co.uk . I've had them on a week and love them. I've had Vredestein tyres before and rate them highly (does that count for much, hmmm...)

My advice would be new tyres on the rear and either put your Michelins on the front or keep the Wanlis on the front. I would personally chuck the ditch finder Wanlis, but I have quite an aggressive driving style (drives like a knob I hear some of you say ). Then in a couple of months buy another couple of tyres (again putting the new tyre on the rear).
