hi there, looking for some help if possible. have 2ltr GT TDI 04 plate with 80, 000 miles. I get loss of power and goes into safe mode and the engine management light comes on, if turn engine of and then back on it runs great but will do this 2/3 times on a long run.
when light comes on it says emmisions workshop. any help would be gratefully appreciated. Ron.

you need a fault code read to find out what is happening

Sounds like turbo overboost fault. If you are able to get to the turbo there is an actuator with a rod coming out of it and is connected to an arm that comes out of the turbo. Try to move the rod down. If it will not move oir is very stiff the vains are siezed in the turbo and that is what causes it to go into limp mode.

As kenney has said you need a fault code read before doing anything, the emmions warning light could also point to the throttle body motor flap, a quick check would be the fan fuse in the fuse box under the bonnet, if its blown chances are your throttle motor flap needs replacing, a code read will confirm this

hi harltech, fitted new actuator as was leeking, rod moves freely but still going into limp mode, mate suggested it might be lumbar sensor as it keeps comming up emmisions???

Phil will have a look and see if fuse blown or not.

When it says emmisions on the dash that is just a dash warning. The fault could be anything engine related not just emissions.

does the arm that comes out of the turbo that connects to the actuator move freely aswell?

yes mate the arm moves freely and when the car is running it goes like hot snot.
seems to happen more when sitting at 60 or above and rev goes past 3,000
normally when overtaking and then wont rev above 2,000
turn of ignition and turn on again and goes like a bullet again

Without a code read it is just guess work, an over boost fault will not show up as emissons warning on the dash, no if's no buts, as your turbo is working as it should it could be, the EGR valve, Throttle body motor flap, boost pressure sensor, boost temp sensor, boost control valve, wiring or ECU fault, like i said without a code its guess work BUT i have NEVER known any of the above (apart from the motor flap) give the emissions warning on the dash, but then 18 yrs in the garage isnt that long tbh.......

P234 was the code that my local garage man came up with on his hand held machine but he didnt seem to know what it meant, cleared the warning on the dash and that was that.
dont know if that is any use to you Phil

I agree that without a code it is just guess work but there is something you can check for free. the fuel filters become clogged and cause a sudden lack of power when trying to accelerate at high speeds.
I know this would not cause a warning light but I have had it so many times and it happens to them before they are even due to be changed.
If it is clogged it will be covered in a thick black residue almost like used engine oil.

Im not saying this will be the main problem because the warning light is on but it is just something worth checking to rule it out.
