New lock required probably. You could investigate the wires in the tailgate. A VCDS read will tell if a fault is registered with the lock.

well tried a new lock and it wasn't that, put it on mates fault finder, nothing showed up so looks like I'll have to take it to a auto sparky, got me stumped (easily done) but thought it would be the lock as you have two ways of opening key fob and door button (wish they'd put a key hole in the door) any more ideas I;d be grateful
    cheers

Not sure if it applies to the estate. But on the saloon you can open the boot from inside. I think its called the emergency release or something similar.

Do you hear a click when you try to open it? If it clicks then either adjustment (if that exists) or voltage not sufficient. This assumes the new lock was a good one. I have no experience of these locks but if there is no sound of a solenoid moving on either lock then its wiring or perhaps even a fuse. Is anything else not working? Sounds like a voltmeter may be handy.

Obviously a different problem, but the switch on my tailgate started clicking on and off constantly one night a few weeks ago, and I had to disconnect the battery and leave it unlocked all night.

My friendly VW dealer soon sorted it out though by replacing the switch, lightening my wallet by yet another Ł100
