I am about to take the V8 out of my S4 to look at the timing chains. The car has done 70k miles. Could anyone suggest what preventative maintenance or parts replacement I should do while I have the engine on the bench?

Also, with a fully kitted workshop and Elsawin how long would it take 1 person to remove and are there any tricky bits to watch out for?

    Many thanks in advance!

With the V8 do you need to remove the engine?

For the V6 you only need to remove the front bumper and the radiator (ok pain but not as big a job).

    Have fun either way.

It is engine out for this. Another great Audi design. The engine has to be removed from the bottom (you lift the car off it) so you will need a lift.

Do you suspect a problem with the chains? That is not particlualy high mileage for replacement and it is a hell of a lot of work

This fantastic car makes a few noises on start up. One is definitely the hydraulic tappets and I think the other could be the chains/tensioners. I will try an oil/filter change first and probably have a look at the oil pressure hold valves in the top of the block at the same time together with an oil pressure check but am preparing myself for the mammoth task. I won't be completely happy driving this machine until I have checked these vital aspects.

I have a bathroom and bedroom to finish first before I have enough brownie points to be allowed to indulge myself with the pleasure of this job.

If the engine code is bbk then

Unfavourable vacuum situation in the variable intake manifold because a too early activation of the solenoid valves for the variable intake manifold by the engine control unit leads to vibrations of the internal intake manifold roller. This causes a brief rattling noise.

post engine ecu part number and software number

    ecu p/n 8E0910560 R or B sw versions 0010 to 0040

there is always a nosie from cold start due to a delay in oil pressure which causes no longterm damage

If you consider removing the engine then you need a flat bed platform to lower it, the oil retention valve will not be the problem and its either of these suggestions or right bank tensioner

    Man,

I would be shot if I put a V8 in the bath (I am sure there are better ways to clean it).

Thanks for all of your comments and suggestions. It is a BBK and the data on the ECU is :-
    Control Module Part Number: 8E0 910 560 B
    Component and/or Version: 4.2L V8/5V G 0020
Interesting comment about the intake roller. I can convince myself that the noise I think is hydraulic tappets is the roller. Is it possible to have the ECU re-programmed to stop the roller moving and are you ruling out the tappets?

If I had a spare bath by the way, there are only a few adornments I would rather see in it than an Audi V8!

    The engine ecu requires updating with Update CD - Part No. 8Z0 906 961 B and 4E0 906 961 J

The update leads to the following changes:

The exhaust flap is always open and no diagnosis of the electric selector valve is possible.

Up to 1700 rpm the engine feels more robust because the flap is always open.

Negative load change is harder and overrun cut-off faster, therefore more direct accelerator response and reduced overrun after taking foot of accelerator.

When driving off from stationary the engine speed is reduced slightly to prevent the clutch from slipping through.

speak to your local dealer and ask them to run it and see if this sorts it out

friend of mine has same car and had that same noise on start up, switched t a different oil and the noise went! apparently you shouldn't have to worry about the timing chains untill about 400k!!

Yes the rattle from the right bank can be reduced with a different oil grade but the noise mentioned matches the sw update more than the tensioner/chain grrrrrrrrrrr noise from cold start
