    Hi,

I'm planning on cleaning out my sump (1.8 20v n/a). I want to clear the oil pickup, seal the leaky gasket and just give it a general flush and clean. Its full of orange plastic bits from a collapsed dipstick guide!

Whats the sump like to get off? I've had a quick look and it looks as though the sub frame needs dropping, is this correct? Does anyone have any tips or know of any problems I might encounter?

    Thanks

Whatever way you do it, there's work involved.

Here's a way to do it without dropping the sub-frame
    or using a engine hoist...

Now that's proper hard-core. Bet their neighbours loved em! A blue tarp under the car would have been a good idea.

I remember I was working on my A4 in the drive. It was already past midnight, but it was a fine summer's evening, so I could have carried on until the early hours. I needed to remove the hub nut, and it was on as tight as a gnat's chaff. I tried levering it with an extension bar and socket, but what it needed was a little gentle persuasion with a lump hammer. I drove a couple of miles out of the village and whacked it, drove back and completed the job. I'm the perfect neighbour!

Like many 1.8T owners I have just had the three beeps of death. . . but taking the sump off is actually really rather simple once the lock carrier is removed. I just wedged the engine mounts up about half an inch and hey presto off came the sump. One intense dishwasher cycle later and it and the pick up were sparkly clean and ready to go back on, even did the cam belt and water pump at the same time just to be on the safe side. Oh and I was clearly pride of the neighborhood with car bits littered everywhere but hey Audi prices forced me to do it.

My neighbour spent the 90's doing carpentry in his garage untill the early hours. I now repay the favour by working on the car at all hours....
    Its a give take relationship
