    Hi

The Golf 4 has a real problem with the window lifters. I have a 2002 Golf GTi and both the front window lifters have failed recently. With mine the plastic clips holding the glass failed and the glass became loose. Is this what you mean?

I needed a new lifter for each side (about £78 inc VAT from VW) - the only good news is that the fault is so common that VW dealer have loads in stock so no need to order specially. You have to remove the door panel, the wiring loom, the door lock and the whole window lifter mechanism. There are not worth repairing so don't try just buying new clips....

You can do the job yourself but it is a bit tricky but it does save 1 - 2 hours worshop labour charge.

    Hi
If you look on the forum there are plenty of people with the same problem. Some say that you can get new clips or even repair the old ones but personally I would recommend getting the whole lifter mechanism. The hassle of taking it all apart and trying to stick the clips with Araldite and then getting all the cables back into place is just too much.....

Just a couple of words of warning: 1. If one has gone the chances are that the other door will also fail soon.
    2. the torx head bolt holding the door lock in place can be VERY tight - take care not to damage the head otherwise you will be in trouble.....

    Good luck

Hmmm ... I think I may be in trouble! Our window went (in the open position, of course!) yesterday. A new regulator was with the garage in 20 minutes (so yes, obviously a common problem).
I've come across the problem with the very tight Torx head bolt. Any ideas what the size of the bolt is - to save damage? Also, I may have damaged the first one, which was very tight. Any ideas what can be done in this case? (can I for example remove the interior panel without removing the lock? Looks like it may just be possible but before I start, would be useful to get a sanity check!

    Cheers

    Lars

    Hi

Yes it is possible to remove the broken window lifter machanism without removing the lock BUT you need to separate the lock from the metal panel first . There are 2 -3 plastic fasteners poking slightly through the metal panel. You need to push these out (ie break them) to get the panel off and away from the lock.

When it comes to putting the new panel back on you will need to push these plastic "pins" back through the holes as best you can and try to araldite them back in place. If you have stripped the torx bolt head I do not see that you have any othe choice.

    Good luck!

    Peter

Thanks for the response. I ended up not removing the lock and doing exactly as you said - following the advice on this page: http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107.

Have also discovered that they're not Torx bolts but splines (bizarrely, the Torx worked when I took the drivers side to bits a couple of years ago - maybe I was just lucky ...)

    Cheers
