    Hi i have just put vag com on my 2004 A4 2.5tdi triptronic because PRND has started flashing in red on the dash and i dont have any drive until it stops and it came up with fault code 18201? It had a recon gearbox 4 months ago and is still under warrenty but they didnt change the ecu could they of damaged it some how?

    I believe there is a problem with my gearbox ecu and i know a company that will fix it if i send it off to them but i dont know where the ecu is on my car could anyone advise me where its is and have difficult it is to remove?

    Any help appriciated

    Thanks

    Tony

    as far as i am aware the ECU is in the gearbox itself.

    Hi your gearbox should be a 01j transmission the easy way to tell is look at the gearbox if its all alloy with no sump and a wiring loom going into the back top end of the gearbox then its a 01j and the ecu is inside the transmission. To remove it you need to remove the rear gearbox mount and frame unplug the loom by turning the lever anticlock then remove all the size (45 torx) bolts from the end case and pull the case off note the oil will come out the gearbox. You will then see the ecu its in black plastic. There is 3 size (30 torx) bolts holding it in the gearbox take the 3 bolts out and pull the ecu off but be careful there are long speed sensors on the ecu that can be easy broken hope this helps

    Yes I know he said he has the tip box but sometimes people get mixed up the tip box will have a sump on it which will be the ZF auto but in 30 years reconditioning automatic transmissions I have not come across an ecu fault with a ZF before so was just posting the info about how to remove the 01j ecu so he can work out which box he has and also will know where both ecu are

    Another way to determine which box he has is simple
    Front wheel drive = multitronic
    Quattro = tiptronic
