Hi, hope somebody can give me some advice here please. Just bought a terrific 2nd hand '57 plate Passat Sport 140 TDi & very pleased with it so far. However, one problem I am having is with the I - Pod adapter that was fitted when the car was new. Plugged my son's 4th generation I Pod touch into the adapter (on a cable in the glovebox), pressed the CD button on the RCD 300 single CD MP3 player head unit but no joy, no music no playlists etc - nothing to indicate the head unit is speaking to the I-Pod or vica versa. Tried pushing the CD button on the head unit twice as well as described in the manual but still nothing.

Phoned local VW dealer where I bought the car & they are telling me the adapter that was fitted to the car is not compatible with the latest I- Pod touches, only older ones. Has anyone had this experience or able to provide me with some ideas on how to get the I-Pod playing through the car stereo or confirm what VW dealer has told me. Can I get a newer adapter to fit to make the thing work ??,

    Many thanks.

Mmmmm, I think there should be an easy fix. Where are you located? I know a great auto electrician in the midlands area.

Not sure if this helps as I think I have the ipod touch 3rd generation with the standard VW ipod adapter.

Although it does not charge it, it does seem to work fine. I just need to make sure the Ipod is switched on when I plug it in. Also you need to make sure you have playlists setup on the Ipod as each of the "CDs" on the RCD will play a playlist, as you cannot control the Ipod directly and have to do everything from the RCD head unit.

CD 1 - 5 are the first 5 play lists in alpha betical order and 6 is play all. I have named my play lists 1-first, 2-second etc also it gets a bit screwwy when finding vids etc.

I have a 4th gen ipod nano using the VW Media In - which is chargeable if you use a Scosche (sic?) adaptor.

I also used it on my previous Audi A4 with no problems - with a standard ipod adaptor with playlists you described.

Basically VW Group wiring did not keep up with Apples.

Have you tried that on yours?

Are you sure it's "Media In" I thought that only came in with the 310/510 Headunits sometime around mid 2008.

Media In works with the latest gen ipods, has full navigation via head unit and MFSW and track information on head unit and MFD.
Also charges my 6th gen classic fine.

    Cheers

Yes mines the RNS510 sat nav in a September 2009 model - and it still requires the adaptor to charge the nano - as it did with the old Audi equivalent of the 6 cd unit.

My point is for anyone whose ipod doesn't charge using VW's various ipod adaptors to try the Scosche.

The Media In was an option with the RNS510 by the way - and works fine now it has had the software upgrade (downloaded from VW Germany's website) to cure the occasional display glitch.

Here's the link if you need it for your's:

Amazingly(?) the dealers in Birmingham know nothing about this!!!

North of Scotland I'm afraid - bit too far from the Midlands but appreciate your help.

I think the older generation Ipod interfaces dont work with 4th Gen Ipod Touch or Iphone 4, I would recommend getting on older Ipod Classic, this should be charged by the interface and then let it live in the car..

    Hi,
I had a similar issue with my wife's Touran with the old VW iPod kit, it would not work with my iPod touch, after a bit of research, I found out that I needed a Charge Adapter / Converter 12V to 5V as the newer iPods run on 5v and not 12v, simply plug this on the VW lead and then connect the iPod, and it all works as if it was a 6 disc player – downside on the early VW iPods kits is no track info is displayed.

    Have a look at:
