Latest audi TDI/TFSI engines

I've been contemplating on buying an A5 coupe for months. However, I always thought a car with a 2.0 badge was a gas guzzler. However Im now mistaken. I've been looking through the A5 brochure and was wondering;
The 2.0 TDI would cost £110 to tax a year. The same as my A3 1.4 FSI costs.
In terms of running the car, my type of driving is mostly urban and some motorway. My trip to work is 9 miles each way. 6 of those miles is motorway. I do up to 2 long trips on motorways a month. Does running a diesel car on rural roads actually cost a lot more than my petrol car? Should I go diesel is the question, as I always thought diesels are for mainly motorways?
Im surprised to notice how clean the latest audi engines are.

The vast majority of my driving is in London traffic, and I get anything from 35mpg to 45mpg from my 2.0 diesel Passat - to put that in perspective, my Merc C180 that I traded in for the Passat was giving me about 20-25mpg. Not only is the fuel consumption better by quite a margin, the performance is a hell of a lot more from the Passat (the grunt from the diesel engine is a great bonus on dual carriageways etc).

At the moment, I doubt I will return to a petrol car ever again.
