I am driving a 51 plate 1.9 TDI. Was driving home from work when the water pump went. The low coolant message came on and could hear that a bearing had gone.
when I got home, filled the coolant to the brim and then tried to drive it to the garage who were going to replace the pump (bout 7/8 miles away) got onto the motorway when the car when into uber limp mode, (wouldn't let me go above 2000RPM) and the coolant Message came back. Knowing this wasn't good, I pulled over but as I came to a stop, the engine cut out. The water pump has now completely gone (pour water into reservoir, it comes straight out the pump) and I have had it towed to the garage.
My concern is the car won't start.... I don't want to spend the money repairing the water pump to find that there is something much worse wrong! It turns over fine but just won't start. Is this the ECU refusing to let the car start until I have fixed the water pump (not sure how it knows) or is this the sign of a worse problem???

Take the cambelt top cover off and check the cambelt I think you've most likely thrown the belt off the sprockets, big big problem.

    Sorry to say..

Could be a big problem.... the water pump is on the same belt as the cam belt...

If the pump has locked out or collapsed it may of taken the cambelt with it and more than likely caused some damaged to the engine...

If the water pump fails and its a impeller issues.. you "can" be ok to drive a mile or 2..

Once that cam cover is off you will be able to see in more detail....

Only option is to start the job and take it from there.

    Good Luck.

    Rick

Once the pistons have clouted the valves the damage has been done and it will crank over, you can tell by the ease of cranking it over(no compression)hope not for your sake pal.
