    Hi,

    I bought a 1.8 n/a A4 about 2 weeks ago for a bargain price of £500.
Since then I've changed the coolant temp sensor, cleaned the throttle body, replaced the curvy breather pipe and replaced the fan belt, fuel and air filters. The engine runs sweetly now (apart from the noisy tensioner on the ac belt, job for another day)
I turned my attention to the running gear and replaced the rear wheel bearings, discs and pads but I still had a whining noise, the n/s cv joint needed doing (which only took half an hr) so at the same time I thought I'd do the wheel bearing as the noise seemed to be coming from that side. I damaged the lower front control arm ball joint, so had to replace that too!
I drifted the old bearing out and with the absence of a press, I drifted the new one in. Job done, time for test drive... Still whining!! My questions are..
    1) Could I have damaged the new bearing drifting it in?
    2) It seems to whine more going round left hand corners about 60ish, does this indicate a particular side?
    3) Could it be the o/s wheel even though the noise is the other side?
    4) Lastly, could I have cocked the rears up by overtightening them?

Btw, this forum has been a godsend, thanks everyone!

(Could I have damaged the new bearing drifting it in?) it depends were you hit the bearing.A whine from left hand cornering indicates the left wheel bearing.if you have overtightened the rear bearings it should be able to see(feel) as they will overheat and the grease will melt

    Thanks.
Unfortunatley I didnt have anything big enough to drift on the outside of the bearing, I put the hub in the bearing and knocked it in that way, with an fbh.
I did the rears as suggested, just so the washer behind can move a touch plus a little tweak. No sign of grease coming out.
