A3 1.9 TDI (130) unknown werring noise

Dear all audi boffins,

I have an Audi A3 1.9 TDI (130) 2001 and I am getting a very distinct werring noise from the engine, it is very frustrating as I cannot seem to pinpoint where it is coming from. To describe my meaning of 'werring noise' it is definitely a spinning part like a bearing on it's way out.

The noise seems as though it is coming from the left side of the engine, where the cam and timing belt are, I know it is not the cam belt tensioner as I have replaced that for a new one recently.

The noise has been on and off for for some time, but has become more frequent. If I turn the wheels, left or right, it seems to exsentuate the noise, but the noise does occasionally persist without turning wheels at all. The noise does not get louder when I accelerate.

That's all I can really say about it. I hope someone out there can help me with this as I do not want to take it into a garage, I look forward to your responses

After some thought, it only seems logical that the part making the werring noise, considering the effects of turning the wheel left to right, is the power steering pump, which has spinning parts.

It is most likely that one of the bearings is on it's way out, does anyone know if you can recondition these parts as they are fairly expensive, well I know you can recondition them as people are selling refurbished ones but the question is where can I get hold of the new components for the refurbishment ?

have you checked the PS fluid level, low fluid can make the pump noisy.

Thanks for your replies, I checked the level of the ps fluid and as you suspected it is low, so I will top that up and see if it solves my issue.

I'm no expert, my friend had exact same problem, turned out to be wheel bearing and sensor, just a thought.

As mentioned, it'll be the power steering fluid being low.
