Just been reading about the corrosion issues because of the sponge behind the front arch liner.
I haven't noticed any corrosion (yet) but wonder if the advice is to get these sponges out?

I took mine out a few months ago. From what I read, they are there for sound insulation.

I've had no noticeable increase in noise since getting rid.

Yes you are better without them. But... the rust is caused when the lower edge of the foam rubs the inner lip of the wheel arch at its highest point. As this is an area that suffers from dust, dirt, grit, salt and vibration is rubs away the inner wheelarch paint/galvanizing to create the corrosion from the inside out which is exactly why your car is covered by a 12 year corrosion warranty.

Remove this foam and you will negate your warranty. Try to repair yourself and again you will not be covered. VW are aware of the problem and will replace /repair your wing. If you present a vehicle that is scratched dented or has had the wing damaged/repaired previously don't expect much sympathy or help. Both Golfs and Passats are affected. Only VW approved paint and bodyshops can undertake any work.

Polite persistence is required. There is a link in the Golf section to a vag confidential worldwide bulletin that you will find very helpful to download.

If you consider a claim to be not worth your while then remove the foam and de-rust the wing but be prepared to find that the inner wheelarch lip simply crumbles even though it appears to be sound. New VW wings in primer were about £140 in 2010. Painting is the expensive part.

Two questions arise....is it not appropriate to just trim off the lower part that rubs and collects grit? Also, isn't the people we need to 'kick of ' with VW rather than the dealer?
