Upon hard acceleration (up to the red line) my passat sport tdi chucks out blue ish smoke....(and it does use oil) the car has only done 28,000 miles..! my car has been re-mapped by giac (~150bhp), some time ago now, and thinking about it the smoke issue may have been noticeable since then, or maybe i was looking for it?

Any ideas? possible turbo working too hard? i was under the impression all the sport tdi hardware was thesame as the 150tdi motor?

    Cheers

There are two main reasons that the higher bhp PD's burn oil.

    1. Oil is seeping through your turbo seals, and blowing along the boost pipes to the inlet manifold, and being burnt in the engine. (remove lower boost pipe, and drain any collected oil)

    2. Your car was factory filled with 'long life' oil, and still uses the long life servicing. This can prevent or vastly slow down the oil seals bedding in, especially if you baby the engine. (you would use a 'lot' of oil, usually ok by 20,000 miles)

Fuuny you should say that about oil in the pipes to the intercooler, but there has been oil leaking from the pipe above the chassis rail (and an oil residue on the chassis rail), not sure if top or bottom. The car is on longlife oil, but this gets changed every year dispite miles.

    What do you suggest?

If you dont have a particulate filter, i would switch from the 'long life' to a more regular oil change, and change it every 4 months or so.

This should help to stop the oil in the boost pipes, associated with the higher bhp PD's.

If your car has been remapped, it is not unusual to see a bit more smoke.

Maybe increasing the boost pressure a little would help.

I always post this vid when people worry about smoke. It is HEALTHY for a diesel to smoke a little. It's almost in their nature. This is mine charging along a Czech airfield.... When your smoke is worse than mine (although mines better now) get back to us. (and then worry about your effect on global climate change )

Jason - Rather mad Skoda Fabia driver.... Odd whiff of diesel coming from him.

I can't understand why you would red line a diesel anyway?? above 4k your gaining nothing so change up a gear instead of raggin the *** out of the engine.

I'd be worried if a diesel wasn't using oil, also any remapped pdtdi will smoke under heavy accelleration due to the exhaust system getting cleaned out of carbon deposits and also at the top end there will be some unburnt fuel as well( high revs above 4k)
If your car is on longlife then don't leave the air cleaner element to the normal change time/miles.For the sake of a few quid just change it regular along with the fuel filter as this will help the engine run cleaner.

Most remapped pd's will flash up around 10k on the service indicator anyway and will never go anywhere near the supposed 20k maximum.driven hard it'll sometimes only do 8k between service

Ini....sorry but what do you mean by particulate filter??...reference boost pipes, i guess i need to have both pipes off and drain out as much of the oil as poss, do i need to take off the undertray to access the bottom pipe?

devonutopia...nice video...your smoke is mainly black (fuel), i'd say mine is mainly blue...but about the same amount.

colb666....since the remap, my engine power is still there up to the red line, where as before the remap it wasn't. The air filter is brand new, of which i will replace when the oil is renewed. I haven't experience the service indicator on yet.

    Cheers

Man, if your car smokes blue to such extent, then you will need a new turbocharger, possible even a new engine/overhaul. If you really like to trash an engine, get a petrol 1.8 T. That would take some pounding, but it will be expensive to run and you have more ponneys to play with at your feets !

Devon - you said if anyones diesel smoked more than yours to throw you a line. well here it is - my 99' 1.9 TDi audi just had the airintake sensor replaced and i also used injector cleaner on a full tank of fuel. the thing smokes obscene amounts of black smoke and today its strarted rather intermitant gurgle when i rev it up in nutural. its also swollowing more fuel than usual. i only got 700Km out of 60ltrs. now im not light on the pedal all the time but its done 1100 on 60ltrs before. whats going on with the smoke and the gurgle when reving??? is me turbo dying or are my injectors dying?????? i cant find a real trusted mechanic here in poland where im based id like to sound like i know what im talking about when i go in...
