Golf GT TDi 150 Knocking noise

Help please!

My 53 plate Golf 150 tdi has just started making a thumping/knocking noise as if it is misfiring when idle which became louder/worse on the short drive home. Any ideas? The car has done 86k with a full VAG service history, wit the last full service being done last Monday. The timing belt was also done at 80k. Should I drive the car or get it checked first?

I hope this is not going to be expensive...

It sounds like you may have wear to camshaft and followers..I would suggest you get it checked by a dealer they'll know about potential problems these on the 150 in particular..Could be a very expensive repair..Sorry to be the bearer of bad news if this is the case..

Thanks for the advice. From a brief search of forums this appears to a very common problem on the 150tdi engine with expensive repairs required. VAG seems to very aware of the issue - I wonder how understanding my local VW dealership will be...they also gave the car a clean bill of health last Monday!

My Golf is going in to a VW dealership today for diagnosis and I've also set up a claim with VAG UK with the view to obtaining a contribution towards the cost. Will advise the outcome...

VW UK confirmed today they would go 50/50 for the cost of replacing the camshaft and 'buckets' on my TDI 150. Half of the bill being £418.

If your TDI 150's cam is on the way out then definitely pursue VW for half the bill

I have a 52 plate 150 diesel with a worn camshaft. I have just got off the phone to their customer care department who told me that because my car is 5 years and 1 month old they won't do anything!! although the mileage is only 74500! I don't really know what to do now, can anyone advise of any avenue I could go down in order for them to help me?
